Crystal's Cancer Blog

Some Background

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time blogging to i am just going to say how i am feeling. Maybe i can get some feedback and some help.

My mother is a US Air Force Retired Chief Master Sergeant she spend 30 years on Active Duty and only retired when she was diagnosed back in 2008. My sister and I are also Military Members my sister is Active Duty Army Stationed currently in Texas and I got out of the Air Force in 2005 and went into civil service with the Army stationed in Germany. My mother went through radiation and chemo therapy in 2008. By 2009 the cancer seemed to be slowing down and she was able to come off treatment for the end of 2009 and some of 2010. At the end of 2010 the cancer came back and she began her fight all over again.

In February of 2011 My father Passed away from Cancer of the Esophagus. In August of 2011 My sister and I both received Red Cross messages saying my mother has 6 months to live and that we should return home as soon as possible. My sister was at that time in Iraq on her most recent tour of duty and unable to come home. So my kids and I left my Husband stationed in Germany and came home.

Since August my mother has been undergoing treatment on Avastin and Tarceva and another one that I don’t remember the name of. On the 4th of January here cancer was still not responding to treatment and her Dr. at Moffitt Cancer center said that Chemo would be stopped because her cancer was not responding. So we got all her records and we are now trying to find alternative treatments.

She didn’t want to ask the Dr how long she would have left now that she is not receiving any treatment. But I need to know…I have been trying to contact her Dr. and Nurses but haven’t heard anything back.

Can anyone help me out on just how fast this might progress?

Sarah Friedman, Deb threw a punch at your cancer.
Deb sent you a prayer.
3 people sent you a hug.

wow, bless your hearts. I wish I had some answers for you. Your in my prayers
Claudya

 Thank you

I don’t know the answer either Crystal. Do you have your Mom in hospice care? If not I would strongly suggest that. They will help you with everything! Including, questions, medication, comfortable bed, Dr’s…They are just angles in street cloths.
Sending prayers and love!
Also you are at the right place at bfac. People her are wonderful and supportive!

Sorry the chemo wasn’t effective on her cancer.
My sis cancer did not respond w/ 2rounds of chemo. they are currently talking about trying 2 diff chemo drugs, IF her blood values are within range…
I’m sorry i don’t have any info for you..Just wanted to let you know you are not alone…

I’m so sorry that you and your family going through this. It’s terrible to watch someone you love struggle and not be able to do much to help (went through this with my sister, before getting cancer myself). I would strongly recommend getting a 2nd opinion, and maybe even a 3rd, if you haven’t done so already. Could surgery or targeted radiation be an option? Some people choose to try an alternative route at this stage of things, if conventional medicine is out of ideas. And if it is definite that she is out of treatment options, than I think it’s still very difficult to guess about prognosis…some people live quite a while without any treatment at all, much longer than expected. No one comes stamped with an expiration date, and no doctor has a crystal ball that can make accurate predictions about this. Entering hospice would be a good idea if she does end all treatment-this can be done at home and helps to ensure that your mom is kept comfortable and free of pain. Some recent studies have shown that people who go into hospice live longer than those with similar prognosis who don’t, so if you have it available, it’s worth looking into. My sister didn’t make use of hospice until the last week or so of her life, and I wish she had done it sooner. Stay strong, and keep us posted on how your mom (and you) are doing. Ann

Like everyone here, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your mom.
As they say. where there is life there is hope.
Blog For A Cure is wonderful for support, even if we don’t always have all the answers.
I just noticed one of the advertisers on this page is for Advanced Cancer Treatment. Maybe there are other links to alternative treatment centers.
There are some amazing cancer warriors here, including some in clinical trials and some in stem cell therapies.
You might also check out some of the lung cancer blogs. (Do a search under Members, by type of cancer.)
You might also find some useful info. at the American Cancer Society’s survivor network blog.
Your spirit is wonderful; such a determined warrior for your mom.
By the way, thank you & your family for your service.
Hugs to you, Nicole
